Holy Scents

Below are the notes for a sermon for Epiphany, roughly as I preached it at St Paulinus Church in Crayford on Sunday last at 8 and 10am services. I wonder if you've seen any of the David Attenborough series on Planet Earth – it's a really stunning nature documentary, going further than any other I've seen before, with pictures from the air of places we've not seen film of before. One of the most striking things about it is the sound – you can really hear the sound of the animals as well as seeing them. You can see and hear - it seems - nearly everything that might go on on this planet - but something's missing, even with all this, they can't quite capture the complete experience of being there. Part of what's missing, I think – is the smell, all these places, the desert, the ice caps, the mountains and the swamps must have strong and distinctive smells – not necessarily pleasant – which would be a pervasive part of being there.
